Aerial Hoop & Acro Dance Immersion

With Sarah Norden & Izzi Kessner

Do you desire to move effortlessly from the floor to the air in your aerial hoop acts? Join us as we explore flow and freedom in aerial and acrodance movements.

Together, we will play on the ground with funky cartwheels, soft acrobatics, and flexible floor transitions; and in the air with snakey sequences, unique dynamic skills, and generative movement tasks/games. This weekend will offer you a chance to play with the best of both worlds (aerial and floor), in a combination of technical training, creative vocabulary, and plenty of fun.

This immersion weekend is taught by two coaches who share a love of acrobatic and aerial movement, and each offer distinct insights and technical eyes. They have different backgrounds and relationships to aerial and acrobatic movement, and are excited to support every student at any level in their aerial/acrobatic journey.

About The Coaches

Izzi Kessner (they/he) is a multidisciplinary circus artist originally from Los Angeles, and graduate of the Quebec Circus School. They specialize in aerial rope and acro dance, and strive to share stories of authenticity through contemporary circus. Izzi is interested in the creation of meaning in their circus storytelling, infusing their work with questions of identity and intention. Through their work, Izzi has performed and coached circus across the United States and internationally, and partnered with major brands such as Nike.

Beyond performing, they are a circus researcher and presented at the Circus and Its Others IV conference in 2024.

Sarah Norden (she/they) is an emerging circus performer, creator, and researcher based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. She is a recent graduate of École nationale de cirque specializing in aerial hoop. She also has significant experience with dance, clowning, and group acrobatics, and enjoys engaging with circus off-stage as a coach, dramaturg, and researcher.

Before pursuing circus professionally, Sarah earned a BA from Wesleyan University, where they studied the intersection of science, art, ethics, and the environment. Their approach to circus is shaped by this circuitous path: they like to think about movement and move about thinking. Their recent creative interests include discomfort, queer ecology, and the materiality of the body.

As a coach, Sarah is passionate about teaching aerial research skills, deconstructing mainstream circus aesthetics, and mentoring students to build sustainable, nurturing relationships with training and creation. She loves views that make you whoop and holler, books that make you stay up all night, and friends that make you feel at home in the world.
