Spirit Chasers: A 30 Year Passion with the Human Form in Nature

The Vermont Circus Festival is hosting a literary event launching the newly published book by one of the original trapeze dancers Susan Murphy and her husband photographer Don Carson.

Spirit Chasers is a visually stunning book of photography and word. For over three decades, Don and Susan traveled together across the deserts, canyons, rivers, and redwood forests of the American West. What emerged from these journeys is a rare collaboration of movement and stillness, earth and spirit, tangible presence and ephemeral photographic imagery.

Don’s in-camera photography, crafted before the age of digital editing, is inventive, surprising, and often quietly humorous. Susan, a pioneer in aerial dance, brings her practice into wild land scapes, partnering with rock, water, trees, and light. With Susan’s journal reflections accompanying Don’s photographs, this husband and wife team takes us deeply into the awe-inspiring images of these wild natural places.
